Marriage House

Marriage is like a house. It needs maintenance on a regular basis. Sure, you can let some things go for a while but if you completely neglect a house it will crumble and fall apart in a few short years. So will your marriage.

I have been noticing a trend among couples in recent years. They seem to spend a lot of time doing fun stuff like theme dates and dressing alike, fantasy vacations and taking classes together. They gush over how amazing their spouse is and give each other lavish or creative gifts.

Seriously?

Are they playing house? Are they little kids pretending to be married? Are they trying to hide their age? What are they hiding?

From the outside, it looks like they are decorating their Marriage House with paint and flowers and throw pillows while the plumbing is bad and the wiring is faulty. Their foundations are crumbling and they seem to think that more frills will make it all better. Or maybe they are trying to cover up the problems, hoping they will eventually go away.

I admit, I can be a bit of a cynic when it comes to romance. Married life is hard. LIFE is hard! Jobs change, kids come, sickness and discouragement sneak in from time to time. The list of difficulties is long and depressing.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of good. I can't imagine going through all this alone. (Well, I kind of can, thanks to the Army!) My husband gives me encouragement and support in ways that I never expected. We work hard to keep our family going in the right direction. But sometimes we focus so much on the foundation and structure that we forget to make it pretty.

The ideal home, and marriage, is one that is well maintained and well cared for. It is in good repair AND beautiful. It takes work, a lot of work, to keep up with everything.

I think my husband "forget to make it pretty" because we work so dang hard! Thanks for this post! We are def not on the cute date end of the spectrum...more like "honey, are you alive still after all of that?" Yes? Good...me too...

Great post. I agree, maintenance and decoration. Good for both houses and marriages, and it takes two interested persons to make it happen.
